Kassel’s international flagship is celebrating its birthday: Arnold Bode opened the documenta for the first time on July 15, 1955. He could have hardly guessed at the time how bold his idea was—neither with respect to continuity nor importance. The documenta’s sixtieth birthday is occasion enough to celebrate this worldwide one-of-a-kind art institution. Sixty years of the documenta represent sixty years of constant rediscovery, a cityscape that is marked by outstanding works of art, and intense involvement with international contemporary art.
Under the patronage of Mayor Bertram Hilgen we are celebrating a large-scale documenta birthday party for all of the citizens of the city and the region. Numerous Kassel-based art and cultural institutions, players, and international guests have come up with an especially fine birthday present and are playing host to exhibitions, film screenings, performances, discussions, and readings that take up and allow tracing individual aspects of the documenta’s sixty-year-long success story. The documenta Anniversary Celebration will be opened by the Mayor Hilgen at Friedrichsplatz on July 19 at 11:00 a.m.
Admission to all of the exhibitions and events is free of charge. Registration is not required for the events, and there will be a free shuttle service between the individual venues. A variety of gastronomical and culinary treats will be offered at the upper end of Friedrichsplatz under the motto “Cooking Is Art.”
